Procaine Hydrochloride’s Mechanism of Action: A Cation at the Channel, an Ester in the Plasma
Two functional groups account for almost everything procaine does. A protonated tertiary amine forces it through the hydrophilic pathway at the inner channel mouth; an ester bond hands it to carboxylesterases, which cleave it to para-aminobenzoic acid in tissue and in the bottle alike.
